More Description

About Mehfil from Afrozeh Dastangoi 2026

Mehfil is the only velvet design in the Afrozeh Dastangoi 2026 collection, and the only one built as a jacket suit. A mehfil is a gathering held for music or poetry, and the design is dressed for exactly that kind of evening. What you receive is not one shirt but two layers: a long embroidered velvet jacket with its own front, back and sleeve panels, and a separate shirt underneath. The colour is shocking pink, worked in silver floral embroidery, and the dupatta is organza rather than velvet so the drape stays light against the heavier base.

Fabric Details

  • Shirt and jacket - embroidered velvet
  • Dupatta - embroidered organza
  • Trouser - dyed raw silk, four yards
  • Colour - shocking pink
  • Type - unstitched three-piece

What Arrives in the Set

The jacket is supplied as a front right panel and front left panel with a matching patch for each, two sleeves, front right and left borders, a 0.98 metre back border, and back centre, right and left panels with two back patches. The shirt beneath comes as front centre right and left panels plus ten front and back side panels. The dupatta is 1.98 metres of embroidered organza with two pallu A sections and two pallu B sections. Twelve sharara border pieces are included, along with four yards of dyed raw silk for the bottom.

The Embroidery

Silver thread on shocking pink velvet is a deliberately high-contrast combination. Velvet has a pile, so light catches the nap differently depending on which way the fabric is turned, and silver embroidery laid across it shifts between bright and muted as the wearer moves. The floral motifs are placed along the jacket borders and back panels rather than scattered across the whole surface, which keeps the velvet itself visible. This is the heaviest-looking piece in the collection without being the most densely embroidered.

Stitching and Styling

Velvet has a direction to its pile and all panels must be cut running the same way, or the finished jacket will show patches of different tone under light. Make sure your tailor knows this before cutting. The jacket is intended to be worn open over the shirt, so the front borders are finished pieces rather than seam allowances. The twelve sharara border sections mean the bottom can be built as a sharara if you want volume, or the four yards of raw silk can be cut as a straight trouser and the borders used on the jacket hem instead. Velvet also needs a firmer lining than organza - discuss weight with your tailor.

Which Occasion Mehfil Suits

This is a winter piece. Velvet at a December or January wedding in North India is comfortable and looks appropriate to the season; the same outfit at an outdoor function in April or May will not be. Within the winter window, Mehfil suits receptions, sangeets and evening walimas where you want the outfit to hold its own. If you like the weight but need something lighter on the body, Rang-e-Dastaan in zari gold carries similar presence on a thinner base.

Care and Storage

  • Dry clean only - velvet must never be machine washed or wrung.
  • Do not bleach, and dry in shade.
  • Hang the stitched jacket rather than folding it - velvet creases at the fold line and the mark is difficult to remove.

FAQs

Is Mehfil stitched or unstitched?

Unstitched. You receive embroidered velvet jacket and shirt panels, an organza dupatta, sharara borders and raw silk trouser fabric. Aangan does not stitch - your own tailor cuts to your measurements.

What fabric is Mehfil made from?

The shirt and jacket are embroidered velvet, the dupatta is embroidered organza, and the trouser is dyed raw silk. The colour is shocking pink.

Is the jacket a separate piece from the shirt?

Yes. The set includes panels for a long embroidered jacket and separate panels for the shirt worn underneath. The jacket is intended to be worn open.

What should my tailor know about cutting velvet?

Velvet has a directional pile. All panels must be cut running the same way, otherwise the finished garment shows patches of different tone under light.

Can the bottom be stitched as a sharara?

Yes. Twelve sharara border pieces are included alongside four yards of raw silk. Alternatively the trouser can be cut straight and the borders used on the jacket hem.

Is velvet suitable for an Indian wedding season?

For winter weddings, yes. Velvet is comfortable at December and January functions in North India but is warm for outdoor events later in the year.

How should Mehfil be stored?

Dry clean only, and hang the stitched jacket rather than folding it. Velvet creases at the fold line and the mark is hard to remove.

Is this original Afrozeh?

Yes. Aangan stocks original Afrozeh fabric from the Dastangoi 2026 collection. Fabric composition and piece counts follow the label's own specification.
